THE KULESHOV EXPERIMENT.


Lev Kuleshov was an early pioneer of film. He created this effect called the Kuleshov

experiment, which essentially, meant that he would use the same video of a man, combined a close-up of an actor's neutral face with three different emotional contexts: happiness, sadness, and hunger. This would allow the viewer to add context to the scene. The juxtaposing images he would use, would change the meaning of the man with the neutral face.


 

EISENSTEIN


Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein (22 January 1898 – 11 February 1948) was a Soviet film director and film theorist, a pioneer in the theory and practice of montage. He was one of the first people to use montage and is known widely for his seminal silent film, Battleship Potemkin (1925).

PUDOVKIN


Vsevolod Illarionovich Pudovkin (16 February 1893 – 30 June 1953) was a Russian and soviet director and actor who developed theories of montage. Pudovkin's work is often contrasted with those of Eisenstein, but whereas Eisenstein used montage to show the power of the masses, Pudovkin preferred to concentrate on the courage and resilience of individual people. Pudovkin was Kuleshov’s student & went on to use film as a tool for Communist propaganda.

HITCHCOCK


Sir Alfred Hitchcock (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English filmmaker widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. In a career spanning six decades, he directed over 50 feature films, many of which are still widely watched and studied today. Hitchcock the director of thrillers such as Psycho (1960), North by Northwest (1959) and Vertigo (1958).
