Sound

analysis of sound in "singing in the rain (1952)" and "a clockwork orange (1971)"

Singing in the rain- Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly,1952

in "singing in the rain" they use diegetic sound to show the lack of synchronisation in the new film that is premiering. the diegetic sound shows the actors lack of experience and how new it is as the film becomes unsynchronised with sound and picture, and it is also super echoey and you cant hear what the actors are saying for half of the scene because it has been taken over by the background audio, and also the fact they turn away from the microphone so the talking is muffled and not picked up

A Clockwork Orange - Stanley Kubrick, 1971

in "a clockwork orange" they use non- diegetic sound as they are walking along the side of the reservoir to narrate the speakers thoughts and feelings. the film is also not synchronised to the scene itself because the scene is in slow-motion and the audio narration is in real-time speed, with contrapuntal sound in the background, which created a jarring and conflicting emotion from the scene, which makes the scene disturbing to the audience.
